An education in Jewish law and philosophy has always been both an obligation and a pleasure for Jewish women. A Woman's Mitzvah was written with both beginning and advanced "students" of the Laws of Family Purity in mind. In addition, A Woman's Mitzvah was written to provide teachers of this subject with a well-sourced, readable guidebook.

Based on the lectures of Rav Yitzchak Berkovits, A Woman's Mitzvah provides a clear and pleasingly written explanation of the principles, details and practical application of the Laws of Family Purity. The reader will also find in the footnotes sources for each halachah (Jewish law) as well as much interesting background and historical information. Special attention has been given to distinguish between what is halachah, what is a minhag (custom), and what is a chumrah (a stringency beyond the halachic requirement).

It is the author's fervent hope that from the experience of keeping the Laws of Family Purity properly, Jewish women will experience first hand that which is written about the Torah, "All its ways are pleasant." (Mishlei 3:17.)

About the Author

Meira Svirsky is a noted author and lecturer of the Laws of Family Purity and women's issues, among other topics in Judaism. In addition, she has trained many outreach professionals to be kallah teachers.

After a successful career in journalism, Mrs. Svirsky came to Israel in 1984. She graduated from EYAHT, Aish HaTorah's College of Jewish Studies for Women, where she studied under Rav Yitzchak Berkovits.

Mrs. Svirsky received a Bachelor's of Art in philosophy from the University of Michigan and a Master's of Art in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin. Mrs. Svirsky is married to Efim Svirsky, an internationally renowned lecturer and author of Connection: Emotional and Spiritual Growth Through Experiencing God's Presence. They live with their children in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem.
